Why did our Linux Server content roll back? And can it be recovered?

When our Linux server was restarted all of the MySQL data and files were all rolled back two-three weeks. Why did this happened and can all the lost data be recovered?

Was the server compromised? Was there a cron job or script that malfunctioned? If you have an offsite backup or a local backup you can recover from that. I would check the logs to see what happened.
